It was important to tell the students they will encounter problems, and to try and solve them when they come along. My experience tells me that pupils will shout their problem across the room before attempting to fix. I informed them they were all intelligent young people and to try and fix their issues as best they can.
All pupils managed to register using their google apps accounts, and then progress to the point where I gave them the class code. Sweet… it was going well.
Next I asked them to go to the HS2 cost benefit analysis we had done in the previous lesson and add it to their timeline with the camera. Most managed this well. Some needed to retake the photos, and the great part is that I had full control over what was accepted or rejected.
Some of the pupils then began to see the similarities of Instagram and began to make smilies, and silly comments.
It was at this point I gave two important rules:
- This is a quality piece of work and needs to be presented to the highest standards.
- No smilies or text language to be used.
The next stage was for the pupils to write a conclusive comment about their cost benefit analysis. All responded to this well. Those who finished were then asked to comment on each others posts and respond to their arguments.
This point in the lesson was one of those moments where all pupils were totally engaged. There were no questions, no daydreaming, no talking, all were focussed on the task in hand and you could sense the learning that was happening. In review the pupils were self assessing, peer assessing, arguing, evaluating, improving, and revising….. All high level skills that can lead to an independent learner.
